Early Reading

We understand the importance of reading and of early reading. It is our mission to ensure that every child is able to decode confidently by the end of Year 1 and that every child can read with understanding by the end of KS1.

Reading is the gateway to all learning and getting it right in the younger years is crucial in helping children access all areas of the curriculum and in supporting them to develop a genuine love of reading.

We currently follow 'Letters and Sounds' supported by Jolly Phonics and Phonics Play, teaching phonics across Reception and KS1 for 20 minutes a day.  Through carefully matched books, children over learn the graphemes that they have been taught helping them to build knowledge and confidence in decoding and blending. We operate a keep up not catch up approach, teaching our pupils in mixed ability groups and offering small or 1:1 additional short sessions for those children who need additional support.

Due to the most recent government guidance, we are currently in the process of choosing a new phonics programme.  We will share more information on this once we have made our final decision.
