Writing Enrichment

Our aim is to develop confident, capable writers who can communicate clearly for a range of purposes. Pupils have opportunities to write in different styles, including journalism and creative writing. Through our pupil-led school newspaper, they learn how to report on events, share ideas, and write for a real audience. Our current writing competition provides a further opportunity for pupils to produce their best work and gain recognition for their efforts. Together, these experiences support the development of writing skills while encouraging pupils to take pride in their work.

Amotherby Writing Competition Summer Term 2026

Our aim is to inspire creativity and a love of storytelling through our whole-school writing competition. This year, pupils are invited to take part in an engaging theme—in this case, What’s Behind the Mysterious Door?—with tasks tailored to each age group. From drawing and simple sentences in EYFS to more developed storytelling in Key Stage 2, all pupils are encouraged to use their imagination and express their ideas in a way that suits their stage of learning.

Prizes are awarded for the most creative entries in each key stage, providing pupils with the opportunity to have their work recognised and celebrated. The competition helps to promote enthusiasm for writing across the school and encourages pupils to take pride in their ideas and achievements.

The Amotherby Chronicle

The Amotherby Chronicle is our pupil-led newspaper, created by a dedicated team of Year 5 and 6 pupils. Meeting weekly, the team plan, write, edit and design each edition, taking responsibility for the content and layout of the paper. Pupils report on school events, share news and opinions, and work together to ensure each issue is clear and engaging for readers. They are also involved in promoting and selling the newspaper within the school community. This provides a practical opportunity to develop writing, teamwork and organisational skills, while working towards a shared goal.
