History

At Amotherby Community Primary School, our history curriculum is carefully designed to help pupils understand the past and how it has shaped the world we live in today. We aim to inspire curiosity, develop a strong sense of chronology and encourage pupils to ask thoughtful questions about people, events and changes over time.

Our curriculum includes a rich balance of local, British and world history, allowing pupils to explore different periods and civilisations while also developing a strong understanding of their own locality and heritage. Learning about local history helps pupils make meaningful connections to where they live, while studying world history broadens their understanding of different cultures and societies.

History teaching at Amotherby develops key historical skills from the National Curriculum, including:

  • Asking and answering historical questions

  • Using a range of sources and evidence

  • Understanding cause and consequence

  • Identifying similarities and differences

  • Recognising change and continuity over time

These skills are built progressively from EYFS through to Year 6, ensuring pupils gain confidence and depth in their historical thinking as they move through the school.

We place great value on enriching experiences to bring history to life. These include visits, visitors, practical activities, artefacts, themed days and opportunities to explore history through stories, drama and discussion. These experiences help pupils engage with the past in a memorable and meaningful way.

Through our history curriculum, we aim to develop informed, reflective learners who understand their place in history and are well prepared to engage with the wider world.
