Welcome to Class Five!
In Year Five, we will be building on of all the key skills taught so far. We will read a really extensive and exciting range of books taking us on a journey from Malawi via New York and Ancient Greece. We will experience an interesting range of excellence texts which will inspire us to write our own stories, setting descriptions, letters, newspaper reports and non-chronological reports.
We will draw links between the ancient cultures of the Maya and the Greeks. We will compare and contrast The Alps and oceans. We will develop our mathematical understanding and learn formal written for all four operations. We will investigate and test our scientific predictions involving properties of materials, living things as well as forces. We will be experiencing trips locally to Howsham Mill and further afield to Young Voices singing day in Sheffield.

Curriculum Overviews

Clay sculptures
We created our own Maya gods and goddesses and then sculpted them out of clay. A lick of paint ensured they were extremely colourful!
Science 2026
Thank you to Malton Secondary School who treated to a fascinating afternoon exploring different materials and their chemical reactions. We explored Elephant's Toothpaste creating rubber bands and even blue stringy slime!
Science Week
In our Year 5 session with PowerDown Pete, Year 5 explored WW2 and how they had to ration, use blackouts and grow their own vegetables to help them through the war.
We have completed our natural art pieces. We worked in groups and only used natural materials found on the school site. We have been exploring the work of Andy Goldsworthy and his pieces have inspired us to create our own!
In our Art Topic we have been learning about shading and creating different tones.
This half term, our topic has been oceans. We have explored oceans and the impact that plastic is having on the animals living in this environment. This piece of work is a description of the ocean.
Trip to Howsham Mill
The class had a fantastic time learning about cogs, gears and pulleys.
Career Week 2025
In Year 5 we are enjoying learning about different careers. We thoroughly enjoyed finding out about the police and the different roles we could be. Here are two of our class members trying out the uniform!
We were very lucky to have Mrs Weir in to talk to us about her job as a chief analytics insight officer. We were all fascinated to find out about her role and the skills involved.
Charcoal.
Look at our fantastic still life drawings! We used charcoal and really tried to avoid smudges. We had to think carefully about where the light was hitting our object and then apply darker and lighter shades.
Year 5 have been very lucky to have a drama physical theatre workshop and here are some photographs of the children in action!
Science Family Learning Session
We have had a fantastic afternoon making parachutes during our family learning session. Here are just some of our examples. We had to think carefully about the material used and also the size of the parachutes. Then we tested them to see if our predictions were correct.
